THE BIG SHIFT: the
move that changed your life
You’ve left your country to pursue the Canadian dream. You received your first paycheck in Canadian
dollars. The first thought that comes to your mind is “And how much is that in
pesos? (…or in pounds, rupees, yens, bahts or yuans, as the case maybe.)
Several years into this quest, you’re still wondering
whether you’ve made the right decision; whether re-starting from scratch is
worth the result; whether your homesickness will ever disappear.
You've exchanged your regional manager’s position back home
for a stint as night clerk at 7-Eleven in Vancouver; or your PHD in Mathematics
for driving a taxi. You’ve had to go back to school because your lawyer’s
diploma isn’t recognized here.
You’ve helped build highrise apartments while living in a
cramped dormitory with other dreamers like you. Or you’ve worked looking after
other people’s children while someone else back home look after yours. You’ve
worked 16 hours a day, fought the cold, the homesickness and the isolation, but
you keep going because you have a goal.
Then one day, you came out into the sunshine. You’re here.
Your family is here! You’ve accomplished what you set out to do. Canada is now
your home. Sometimes, though, hard work and big dreams alone aren’t
enough. Then you’re faced with a tough choice: leave the arena or keep going.
The Big Shift is all about your stories: Your choices, your successes, your failures,
your dreams, and your moments in the sun.
